The Taste of Black Business Expo took place this past Sunday in the Atrium at Trinity United Church of Christ. It was all about discovering and connecting with Black businesses and organizations of which the community may not otherwise be aware. One of the vendors was Sherman Todd, owner of The Global Village, a women's clothing store located in the Beverly neighborhood. A long, flowy, and well-tailored dress hanging high above caught my attention with its blend of vibrant colors. Sherman said he looks for creations that are both unique and cost-effective. He is inclined to buy items that are stylish yet affordable. Sherman believes that catering to the full-figured woman is equally as important as doing so for any other fashion-conscious woman. When asked what inspired her to start Fe'tiche Cosmetics, Robin Wheeler stated that creating her own cosmetic line has always been a passion of hers. For that reason, she decided to leave corporate America and make her dream a reality. She offers fun, vibrant, and flattering lip colors that are hand-blended and made of all-natural ingredients. I stopped by Virtuosity's table where Brandi Brown, a licensed stylist and educator, had her professional hair care products on display and shared advice with potential customers. (continued below) In addition to checking out some great merchandise, attendees had a chance to receive life-saving information from and sign up for exams with the Metropolitan Chicago Breast Cancer Task Force, whose slogan is "Uniting to End Disparity." Also, Angela Susberry of Calahan Funeral Home was there to share valuable information about how families can save money, avoid confusion, and have peace of mind by pre-planning for services.
Other participating vendors included the Akiba Bookstore, with fabulous jewelry and other items; Premier Urgent Care & Occupational Health Center; Ms. Lane Aprons, offering a variety of colorful and eye-catching options; Gone Again Travel, a group travel company located on Chicago's westside; Merch by BDavis Designs, who sells t-shirts with powerful messages and other items; and Mae Sue Rule Jewelry Design. I had an enjoyable time meeting the vendors; listening to them share their stories; learning about the products and services they have to offer; and being informed.
