The boutique, founded by Donna Coleman, occupies a brick-and-mortar located in the Beverly neighborhood on Chicago’s southside and caters to the fierce, fabulous, and sophisticated plus-size women. ​“Thank You, Lord!” That is the song we sang before a soul-stirring, uplifting prayer as we gathered to support Donna Coleman during the grand opening of her boutique DSC Vision Corner in November 2021. After hearing her testimony, there is no doubt in my mind that Coleman’s faith is strong. She admitted, however, that she was talking about her faith but was not walking in it. God was working things out for Coleman to have a space for her business, but, as she stated, “When the opportunity presented itself, I jumped into my fear.” Still, there are people in her life who strategically pushed her through the process while she pushed back. They would not allow her to give up. She finally decided to move forward at the point when her Mom asked, “What happened to your faith?”

Coleman also stressed the importance of obedience. When God sends us messages through others, we should listen attentively and take necessary action. Several people had expressed concern about her well-being, including a neighbor who posed these questions: “Where will your health be in five years if you keep doing what you do? Where is your business going to be if you go down?” Hearing these put things in perspective for Coleman, realizing, “I had to make sure I took care of my temple so He would bless me with my heart’s desire.”

Coleman has come a long way since making the bold decision in December 2017 to permanently step away from a corporate job and become an entrepreneur. Like many others, she has gone through unimaginable changes in the past two years and has had to find ways to adjust. Yet, her networks have kept her strong. Coleman expressed gratitude for those who have offered moral support, prayed, supported her financially, allowed her to sell at vendor events for free, and helped her in any way to get to the point where she is. “I thank everybody for whatever you have done, [whether you] told a friend, passed a card, or bought an outfit.” She is especially thankful to her Mom, her everything, who would not let her give up and encouraged her through rough days. “I watched a dream grow,” said Mother Coleman. “I am so grateful for how God has worked in her life.”
