The Black Harvest Film Festival, described as “Chicago’s annual showcase for films that celebrate, explore, and share the Black, African American, and African Diaspora experience,” returns in 2023 for its 29th year. The festivities begin with an opening night celebration on Friday, November 3, and run through Thursday, November 16. This year’s theme, “Revolutionary Visions,” centers on history, politics, and art, honoring the legacy of Black struggle across the diaspora while calling attention to the impact of intersectionality on the Black experience. You are in for a treat, as the festival offers a mouthwatering feast that will satisfy a variety of tastes. The lineup includes clusters of short films, feature-length films, panel discussions, networking, live music, and more. In celebration of the work of director and screenwriter John Singleton, you can experience several screenings of his iconic films. Additionally, the closing night film tells the inspiring story of writer, actor, filmmaker, innovator, and mold breaker Tyler Perry. Scenes from the 2022 Black Harvest Film Festival In November 2022, I attended the Black Harvest Film Festival for the first time in several years. A month before its opening, the film industry and the Chicago community at large had experienced a significant loss with the passing of festival co-founder, film critic, journalist, and historian Sergio Mims. In his memory, the festival organizers dedicated the occasion to recognizing Mims for his tireless work and invaluable contributions. Earlier this year, the Gene Siskel Film Center established the Sergio Mims Fund for Black Excellence in Filmmaking to honor his “legacy of giving a voice and platform to the next generation of Black filmmakers.” To buy tickets and see the complete schedule for the 29th annual Black Harvest Film Festival, go to https://www.siskelfilmcenter.org/blackharvest.
See you at the movies!
