The day before Mother’s Day, I got the chance to play my very own djembe drum for the first time. I was excited to join Ayodele Drum & Dance’s Mother’s Day African Dance Marathon! The event took place at Sherman Park in Chicago’s Englewood neighborhood, welcoming men and women alike. After participating in the Women’s Djembe session conducted by Victoria Boateng, I tried out Guinea Dance with instructor Zenzile Pearson and live drummers. Even though I am a beginner, I felt comfortable in the drum circle and was able to keep up with the dancing for the most part. I was invigorated after this fun-filled, high-energy day of celebration.
